Colorizing Graphics using Gradients!

Preparation: Open up the graphic that you are going to use and resize your graphic to the size you think it will be at the end of adding your frame on it so you won’t have to resize again.
(Shift + D to) duplicate it twice. Close out the original.
Effects/Sharpen/Sharpen.
Set one duplicate aside. We will use it later.
OK...that out of the way! Let’s get started.
1. Right click on your background layer and promote to layer.
2. Layer/Add Raster Layer
3. Flood 
this Layer with the color white
4. Look at your duplicate image for it’s Identification at the
top of it’s surrounding Blue Border. You may have to enlarge it to see the full ID (On the keypad on the right of your keyboard + enlarges & - shrinks the graphic)
Mine says image 12. Yours will have it’s own ID.
5. Be sure that your canvas with the white fill is active.
6. Masks/New/From Image
7. Click on the arrow head on the box that opens and scroll to the image ID that you remembered in the source window.
Settings:
Source luminance Checked.
Invert Mask data Checked.
Click ok
8. Duplicate your mask layer
9. Masks/Invert
10. Ctrl + A (selects all)
11. Ctrl + F (Floats mask)
12. Go to your gradients in your color palette and open up the selections.
I have picked Chakra3 which is very colorful.
Use the settings as shown below.
13. Flood
your floating selection with the gradient!
14. Ctrl + Shift + F (de-floats) you will see the image reappear.
Now let’s change the blend modes on the 2 mask layers.
Click on the word normal in the layers palette to change these.
15. Change the top mask layer to Overlay
16. Change the middle mask layer to multiply!

Cool huh?!
That is basically it. You can play with the top layer opacity
to cut back on the strength of the various colors from the gradient to what you like best.
Frame it , save it and grin real big! Now you have made that drab graphic come to life with color! WEeeee!
