Needed: This was written with PSP 8 but you should  be able to use PSP7 to get the same results.

Intermediate skill level

Basic knowledge of how to remove a background from around a graphic! If you don’t know how to do this here are some links to learn that sort of thing!

Point to point Lasso tut (Complicated Backgrounds)

To remove solid color backgrounds

A graphic of a flower, animal or something to insert another graphic into. Look at examples for an idea.

A graphic to insert into the other graphic that will maintain the graphic theme.

1. Open your graphic that we will use as the frame.

2. Shift + D (duplicate image) and close out the original.

3. Right click on the Layers palette background and select Duplicate Layer.

4. Click on the Glasses  on your Background layer in the palette so it won’t be seen.

5. Remove the background around the image by which ever methods you choose.  The method(s) you choose will depend on the background that is around your image.

See above for some good tuts to help you do this.

6. Right click on the layer palette and duplicate the image that you have removed the background from (layer 2)

7. Click on the Glasses  on Layer 2 in the palette so it won’t be seen  . We are going to work with layer 3 now.

8.  Eraser Tool: Remove any area’s that you do not want the image to show up in when we paste it ... Such as the head, feet or in my case the feelers, body and wing tips!

Compare to above!

9.  Magic Wand: Select the transparent area by left clicking on it.

10. Ctrl + Shift + i  (Inverts selection)

11. Selections/Modify/Contract

I used 20 to come up to the inner black edges of the butterfly wings. On the image that you use just keep in mind that you want enough left to outline nicely so you may need to use something  a little smaller or larger than the 20 I used.

12. Hit Delete on your keyboard!

13. Open the graphic that you want to put into the selection!

14. Edit/Copy

15. Click back on your transparent graphic to reactivate it.

16. Ctrl + Shift + L  (paste into selection)

17. Ctrl + D  (de-activate selection)

18. Click on the Glasses in both of the layer palettes  to reactivate all of them  and look at what you have got!

19. On your Layers Palette change the mode on layer 3 to Illuminance (Legacy), Screen or overlay. Check out your options and find the one that you find most appealing for the one that you are working on at this time.

Also, don't forget that you can use the opacity sliders on the layers palette too!

Kewl I hope!

20. Note: At this point you can use your  eraser on the 3rd layer for any last second touch ups that you want!

I didn’t like 2 things on what I ended up with . The background and the way the pasted graphic doesn’t mesh nicely next to the body.

This is how I changed this and that!

21. Layers/Add new raster layer

22.  Flood Tool: Fill the layer with what you like.

23. Move the new layer to right above the original background layer. Click and drag it there or Layers/Arrange/Move down (twice)

24. Click on the glasses on the layer 1 and 2 background layers to deactivate them.

25. Click on the top layer to activate it.

26. Layers/Merge/Merge Visible

27. Smudge Tool: Use this to move the pasted graphic over any areas that you would like to cover to improve the appearance.

28. You might want to add a very slight drop shadow at this point.  You don’t want one that will go paste the edges of your background!

29. Click on the glasses on Layer 2 to reactivate it.

30. Layers/Merge/Merge All (flatten)

31. Now you may want to Resize, add a frame of your choosing and save as a JPEG!
